미국합창지휘자연합회(ACDA) 국제활동상임위원회 회장

2020 제주국제합창축제(JICF)에 강사로 초빙된 티제이 하퍼 교수는 매년 축제에 참가하며 제주국제합창축제의 성장에 주목하며 응원을 보낸다. 올해도 변함없이 제주를 찾아 합창음악의 진수를 보여줄 하퍼 교수를 이메일 인터뷰로 합창음악에 대한 이야기를 들어본다.

Q1. 제주국제합창축제에 여러 해 참가하면서 느낀 소감은?

I sincerely have only praise and admiration for JICF, its mission and philosophy, the amazing staff, and its founding director Maestro HeeChurl Kim. I am honored to play a small role in this significant festival each year. Each year this festival continues to grow in size and stature throughout South Korea, Asia and the entire world. It is no exaggeration to say that the top choirs and conductors from every corner of the globe watch this festival very closely. This festival and the related activities sponsored by the ChunSong Foundation are helping to make the world a better place through choral music, community building and service projects that bring people together.

여러 해 제주국제합창축제와 함께 하면서 축제의 사명과 신념, 유능한 스탭진 그리고 설립자이자 예술총감독인 김희철 지휘자에게 칭찬과 감탄을 금치 못 합니다. 이러한 축제를 함께 하는 것이 매우 기쁘고 영광입니다. 대한민국과 아시아 그리고 전 세계를 통하여 매년 이 축제는 규모로나 구조적으로나 성장하고 있습니다. 세계의 정상급 합창단들과 지휘자들이 이 축제를 관심 있게 보고 있다 해도 과언이 아닙니다. 이 축제와 재단법인 천송재단이 주관하는 모든 활동들은 합창음악을 통해 세계를 더 나은 공간으로 만드는 데에 힘쓰고 있습니다. 또한, 많은 사람들이 음악을 통해 하나가 되는 공동체를 만들고 이 사회를 조금이라도 더 좋은 세상으로 만들 수 있도록 힘을 보태고 있습니다.

2. 제주국제합창축제(JICF)의 특징과 위상은 어떠한지요?

또한, 제주국제합창축제의 중요성이라면

The status of JICF continues to grow and be recognized around the world by top conductors for the high quality of the festival structure, the high artistic standards of every performance, and the educational components that elevate the knowledge of all festival participants and the international choral profession.

제주국제합창축제는 더 높은 퀄리티의 프로그램, 각 공연의 예술적 수준, 그리고 축제 참가자들의 지식과 더 많은 합창인들이 생겨 날 수 있도록 교육적인 요소들을 더하고 세계적인 지휘자들을 통한 다양한 방법으로 인지도를 높이며 성장하고 있다.

3. 합창 음악 지휘자의 특별한 점은 무엇일까요?

The Choral Conductor as professional is responsible for a diverse set of tasks that often extend beyond the music. Of course, interpreting the music is the top priority. The Choral Conductor must work diligently to realize the composers’ intentions. Additionally, the Choral Conductor must also be an expert in Vocal Technique, Foreign Language Diction, and be adept at working with instrumentalists. The Choral Conductor must be an Historian able to contextualize why music exists, not just how to perform it well. The Choral Conductor must be an effective communicator who understands and loves working with groups of people from different backgrounds. The Choral Conductor is often a mentor, an advisor, a philosopher, a psychologist, a counselor, a parental figure and even a disciplinarian. Ultimately, the Choral Conductor is someone who loves people and builds community through choral music.

전문 합창 지휘자들은 음악을 통하여 만들어지는 다양한 업무에 대해 책임이 있습니다. 물론, 음악을 해석하는 것이 가장 먼저입니다. 그러나 합창 지휘자는 곡을 쓴 작곡가의 의도나 목적이 무엇인지 파악해야합니다. 또한, 합창 지휘자는 성악적인 테크닉과 외국어 발음에 있어 전문적으로 알고 있어야 하며, 기악 연주자들과 함께 일하는 데 있어 자연스러워야 합니다. 합창 지휘자는 단순히 연주하는 것이 아닌 역사가처럼 왜 이 음악이 존재하는지 이유를 알아야 합니다. 합창 지휘자는 서로 다른 배경을 가진 많은 사람들과 일하는 것을 이해하고 사랑할 수 있는 유능한 전달자여야 합니다. 멘토, 조언자, 철학자, 심리학자, 상담사, 부모 같은 인물처럼, 더 나아가 엄격한 스승의 역할을 맡아야 하기도 합니다. 궁극적으로 합창 지휘자란, 합창음악을 통하여 사람들과 교류하며 공동체를 만드는 사람이어야 합니다.

4. ACDA가 추구하는 비전과 이념은 무엇인가요?

As a not-for-profit organization, ACDA’s primary goal is to create excellence in choral music through education, performance, composition, and advocacy. This means that every project, festival, conference and performance, ACDA strives to help all conductors, choral musicians, and composers learn and grow as one community. Beyond this primary goal, ACDA is also committed to being a positive influence in the community and building bridges between choral communities around the world.

비영리단체 ACDA(미국합창지휘자협회)의 가장 주된 목표는 합창음악의 교육, 연주, 작곡, 참여함에 있어 우수성을 만들어내는 것입니다. 다시 말하자면, 지휘자를 포함한 합창음악관계자, 작곡가들이 하나의 공동체처럼 배우고 성장할 수 있도록 도와주는 ACDA의 각각의 프로젝트, 축제, 컨퍼런스와 공연들을 의미합니다. 이 주요한 목표를 통하여 ACDA는 이 공동체 안에서 긍정적인 영향력을 주는 데에 힘쓰고 있으며, 세계의 합창 공동체들이 교류할 수 있는 다리역할을 하고 있습니다.

5. ACDA의 주요 레퍼토리는 무엇인가요?

The main programs ACDA offers take the form of the monthly publication, The Choral Journal and the annual conferences that feature performances, educational sessions and workshops for every aspect of the choral art. Additional programs exist in Advocacy and Collaboration, Choral Repertoire and Resources, Composition Initiatives, Diversity Initiatives, Education and Communication, International Activities, and Research and Publications. I personally chair the International Activities Committee and I direct the International Conductors Exchange Program.

ACDA의 주요 프로그램인 월간지의 형태인 ‘The Choral Journal'을 발행하며, 합창예술의 모든 면을 위한 공연, 강의와 워크샵들을 진행하는 연간 컨퍼런스를 기획합니다. 추가적인 프로그램들로는 상호간의 지지와 협력, 합창 레퍼토리와 합창 자료, 작곡 구상, 다양성 구상, 교육과 소통, 국제 활동, 그리고 연구와 출판의 분야에서 다방면으로 기획되고 있습니다. 협회의 국제교류활동위원회 위원장으로써 각 국 지휘자들의 교류 프로그램을 맡고 있습니다.

6. 개인적으로 가장 좋아하는 합창곡을 꼽는다면? 그 이유는?

Throughout my career, I have always trusted my heart over my intellect. For this reason, the music of Johannes Brahms will forever hold a special place in my heart. My favorite composition by Brahms is Nänie with text by Friedrich Schiller. The text states that “even the beautiful must die, but to be remembered on the lips of a loved one is holy”. This sentiment gives me hope and helps to connect to the shared humanity in all people.

수많은 경험을 통해 갖고 있는 지식보다는 마음이 가는 방향을 따라야한다는 것을 배웠습니다. 이러한 이유로 브람스(Johannes Brahms)의 음악은 제 마음에 영원히 특별하게 남아있을 것이기 때문입니다. 제가 가장 좋아하는 브람스의 작품은 Friedrich Schiller의 글을 인용한 ‘Nänie’라는 곡입니다. 곡 중 이런 글이 있습니다. “아름다움도 반드시 죽지만 사랑하는 사람의 입술에 기억되는 것은 거룩하다.” 이 감정은 저에게 희망을 주었고 많은 사람들안에서 공동의 인류애를 공유하도록 만들어주었습니다.

7. 제주국제합창축제에 참가하는 한국 합창단들에 조언을 한다면?

I hope that all choirs will attend the Jeju International Choral Festival and arrive with open minds, open hearts and a willingness to learn from those they interact with. Most importantly, I hope each participating choir will sing with passion and a heart full of love!

제주국제합창축제에 참가하는 모든 합창단들이 열린 생각, 열린 마음 그리고 서로 교류하는 모두에게서 배울 마음가짐으로 축제에 참가했으면 좋겠습니다. 가장 중요한 것은, 각 참가합창단들이 사랑으로 가득한 마음과 열정으로 노래하기를 희망합니다.
