광주시립교향악단의 상임지휘자인 홍석원(41) 지휘자는 국립오페라단, 국립합창단, 국립심포니오케스트라와 함께 <처용> 유럽투어를 마친 후 오는 7월부터 부산시립교향악단을 이끌게 된다. 광주시향의 임기는 6월까지다.

부산시와 (재)부산문화회관은 지난 2월 1일, 부산시향 제12대 예술감독에 홍 지휘자를 선임했다고 밝혔다. 임기는 2년이다. 부산시향은 지난 2023년 6월 임기가 만료된 최수열(44) 예술감독 후임을 선정하기 위한 선정위원회를 통해 최종 선정했다. 홍지휘자는 부산시향 하반기 프로그램 구성에 함께 참여할 계획이다.

부산시향은 국내에선 드문 케이스로 서울시향이나 유수의 해외 오케스트라의 경우처럼 임기 중에 차기 상임 지휘자를 미리 선정해 발표한다.

홍지휘자는 부산시향과 두 번의 협업으로 함께 하며 단원들로부터 차기 예술감독 선호도조사에서 최고점을 받은 것으로 알려지며 이후 부산시향과의 활동이 기대된다.

지휘자 홍석원은, 한국인 최초로 클래식 음악의 본고장 오스트리아에서 오페라극장 수석카펠마이스터를 역임하였다. 그는 국내에서 보기 드물게 교향악부터 오페라, 발레, 현대음악까지 모든 영역을 다룰 수 있는 지휘자로써, 언론과 음악계에서 ‘젊은 명장’이라는 호칭을 들으며, 한국 교향악계를 이끌어 나갈 차세대 지휘자의 선두 주자로 평가받고 있다.

서울대학교 작곡과 지휘전공 학사, 베를린 국립음대 지휘과 디플롬(Diplom)과정과 최고연주자과정(Konzertexamen)을 졸업한 그는, 독일음악협회의 [미래의 마에스트로]에 선발되었고, 카라얀탄생100주년기념 지휘콩쿨에서 3위에 입상하였으며 베를린 도이체심포니오케스트라, 베를린 콘체르트하우스 오케스트라, 슈투트가르트 남독일방송교향악단, 본 베토벤오케스트라 등과 성공적인 연주를 가졌다. 또한 오페라에서도 두각을 나타내어 독일 라이프치히 오페레타 콩쿨에서 청중상을 받았고, 스위스 베른 오페라극장, 독일 마인쯔 국립극장 등 여러 국가에 데뷔하여 호평을 받고, 오스트리아 인스부르크 티롤주립극장의 수석 카펠마이스터로 선임이 되었다. 오스트리아 인들이 가장 사랑하는 작품이자 자존심이라 할 수 있는 요한 슈트라우스의 오페레타 ‘박쥐’를 성공적으로 지휘하면서 20회 공연이 매진되는 성공과 함께, 평론가와 언론의 호평을 받았다. 티롤 주 대표지인 티롤러타게스짜이퉁(Tiroler Tageszeitung)은 “환상적인 음악! 지휘자 홍석원은 모든 관객들을 춤추게 하였다”라고 평하였고, 유럽 오페라 전문 잡지 메르케어(Merker)는 “지휘자 홍석원은 오케스트라로 하여금 가장 이상적인 슈트라우스 소리에 도달하도록 했다“라고 극찬하였다.

그는 한국에서도, 평창올림픽기념 오페라 [동백꽃 아가씨, La Traviata], 그리고 2020년 코로나시대 세계 최초의 전막 오페라 프로덕션으로 세계 클래식계가 주목하였던 국립오페라단의 마스네의 [마농] 등 굵직한 오페라 프로덕션을 완벽히 해석했다는 평을 들으며, 유럽 정통 오페라 지휘의 진수를 보여주고 있다. 또한, 2021년 국립극장 재개관 및 8.15기념 국립오페라단의 <나부코>, 그리고 올해에는 베르디의 오페라 <시칠리아의 저녁기도> 한국 초연 등 기념적인 프로덕션을 지휘하며 호평을 받았다. 이미 30여편의 오페라를 200회 가까이 지휘한 그는 오페라 지휘에 있어서 독보적인 활약을 보이고 있다.

국내 대부분의 주요 오케스트라를 지휘한 그는 심포니 분야에서도 관객, 평론가, 오케스트라로부터 호평을 받으며 끊임없는 재초청을 받고 있다. 2021년 광주시립교향악단 제13대 예술감독에 취임한 그는, 대부분의 공연을 매진시키며 예향의 도시 광주에 클래식 음악의 붐을 일으키고 있다. 더불어, 광주시향은 교향악축제에서 2년 연속 역대급 호연이라는 평을 들으며 대한민국의 대표 교향악단으로 올라서고, 전국적 주목을 받고 있다.

Conductor _Seokwon Hong

Conductor Seokwon Hong, the 13th Artistic Director of Gwangju Symphony Orchestra as of April 2021, was the first Korean to be appointed as the principal conductor (Erste Kappelmesiter) of an Opera Theater in Austria. Hong is actively conducting operas, ballets, symphonies, and modern classical music throughout Europe and Asia.

Seokwon Hong has earned his Bachelor degree as a conducting major at the Seoul University, and his Diplom and Konzertexamen at Hanns Eisler School of Music Berlin.

Hong was selected as the 'Future Maestro' from the German Music Association and has won 3rd prize at the 100th anniversary Karajan conducting competition. He has had great success conducting world-renowned orchestras such as: Berlin Deutsch Symphony Orchestra, Konzerthausorchester Berlin, Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra, and Beethoven Orchestra Bonn.

Seokwon Hong has also shown his versatility in Operas. He has received the audience prize from the Leipzig Operetta Competition and has received high praises in his debut performance at the Swiss Bern Opera Theatre and Meinz staatstheater. He was also appointed as the principal conductor of the Innsbruck Tyrolean State Theatre in Austria. There, he conducted Austrian's most beloved work "The Bat" (Die Fledermaus) by Strauss, and had great success, selling out in all 20 performances. Hong received the highest praise from the provincial daily newspaper (Tiroler Tageszeitung) saying, "Fanstastic Music! Conductor Hong made the entire audience dance" and the European Opera magazine 'Merker' quoted, "Conductor Hong Seokwon led the orchestra in making the most ideal sound of Strauss."

Hong is also active in the Opera scene in Korea. He has recently conducted extensive Opera productions such as Pyeongchang Olympic Commemoration Opera 'La Traviata' and Massenet's 'Magnon', and received favorable comments. Hong has also been appointed as the musical director of 'Opera's Garden' produced by Seongnam Cultural Foundation from 2020.

Hong has conducted many of Korea's best orchestras such as: Seoul Philharmnoic Orchestra, Korean Symphony Orchestra, Bucheon Philharmonic Orchestra, Gyeonggi Philharmnoic Orchestra, KBS Symphony Orchestra, Busan Philharmnoic Orchestra, Incheon Philharmonic Orchestra, Suwon Philharmonic Orchestra, Seongnam Philharmonic Orchestra, Gangnam Philharmonic Orchestra, Prime Philharmonic Orchestra, Wonju Philharmonic Orchestra, Jeju Philharmonic Orchestra, Hangyung Philharmonic Orchestra, and many more. Working with many symphony orchestras, Hong has received great remarks conducting symphonic works as well. He has especially been highly praised by musicians and music enthusiasts for his successful debut with the Gwangju Symphony Orchestra at the 2021 Korean Orchestra Festival, leading the audience to expect more great things to come in the near future.
