그림을 그린다는 것은 공간을 찾아가는 과정이고 우리 영혼에 대한 경험이라는 것을 깨달았다. 그것은 알지 못했던 공간을 찾아가는 여정이고 내면의 발견인 것이다. 그림은 주어진 시공간에서 우리의 움직임에 대한 끊임없는 생각들을 정의해 주는 것이다.

름 빨라니야빤은 1957년 남인도 타밀나두 주의 데바코타이(Devakottai)에서 태어났다. 빨라니아빤 그림의 구성에는 언제나 다른 세상에서 온 것 같은 특징이 있다. 그의 시간에 대한 독자적인 탐구는 대단히 복잡한 형태의 표현으로 나타난다. 그의 그림은 힌두교 세계관에 근거하여 개인의 의식과 눈으로 인식할 수 있는 이미지에 대한 정의에 질문을 던지는 생각의 내적 지평과 우주에 대한 탐구에 쓰이는 일시적인 과학적 상징으로 우리를 안내한다.

 

빨라니아빤의 그림 앞에 선 관객은 자연스럽게 의문이 생긴다. “작가는 과연 예술가인가? 과학자인가?” 에셔Escher 를 탐구하던 초기의 그림부터 계단, 나선형의 구조, 다른 행성계를 추적하여 발생한 데이터를 복제하는 이미지를 재구성한 “Documents” 시리즈 등에서 일상적이거나 전형적인 것을 뛰어 넘는 세계에 대한 관심을 여실히 드러내고 있다. 또한 반복되는 숫자나 수학적 방정식, 추상적인 컨셉인 시간이나 시간반복의 개념에 대한 관심이 예술적 형태로 나타나는 것 또한 흥미롭게 표현한다.

 

“나의 학창 시절이던 1987년, 대학교 건물의 계단을 사람들이 무심히 오르는 것을 보며 “Steps” 시리즈를 그리게 되었다.“Dancing steps on my birthday”는 움직이는 것에 대한 나의 흥미에 더 깊이 파고드는 계기가 되었다.

 

 

 

“1990년 처음 비행기를 타보았을 때 창밖으로 보이는 대지의 패턴을 보며 움직이는 땅과 건축에 대한 나의 관점에 변화가 생기기 시작했다. 그때 이후 내 작품의 주요 화두는 물체의 물리적 인지와 그 반대 특성에 관한 것이었다. 물론 때에 따라 물체의 심리학적 중요성에 대해 탐구하기도 한다. 그 둘은 뗄래야 뗄 수 없는 것이다. 이 시기 그림의 묘사성으로 인해 그림에 대한 나의 열정은 형태의 호환성과 ‘콩테’그림의 우주와 더불어 형상적 실험으로 이어졌다. 이 시기에 또한 그림을 그린다는 것은 공간을 찾아가는 과정이고 우리 영혼에 대한 경험이라는 것을 깨달았다. 그것은 알지 못했던 공간을 찾아가는 여정이고 내면의 발견인 것이다. 그림은 주어진 시공간에서 우리의 움직임에 대한 끊임없는 생각들을 정의해 주는 것이다.”

 

시간 .공간. 움직임. 이 세 가지 요소에 대한 빨라니아빤의 관심은 그를 무한대의 잠재력을 가진 인간의 내면을 탐구하는 세계로의 여정으로 이끌었다. 이것을 예술적 관점이냐 과학적 관점이냐를 논하는 것은 중요하지 않다. 그는 이렇게 말한다. “학창시절동안 나는 과학에 큰 흥미를 느끼고 나를 과학자라고 생각했다. 숫자와 수학, 천문학에 대한 탐구는 나에게 세상을 상징과 추상의 연속으로 볼 수 있는 문을 열어주었다. 학교에서 받은 예술 교육은 나에게 창조의 과정과 그것의 심미성에 대한 다양한 가능성을 보여주었다. 그러나 오늘날에도 나는 내가 이 모든 것을 완벽하게 이해했다고 말할 수 없다. 예술가로 태어나는 사람은 없지만, 머릿속의 창조성에 관한 부분을 계발하면 예술가가 되는 것이다. 나의 경우, 나의 관심 영역은 여전히 과학과 심리학이고, 이 두 가지 요소가 나의 예술과 사고 과정의 가장 중요한 축을 이룬다.“
