아시아 최대 규모의 국제합창축제가 제주에서 펼쳐진다. 올해는 ‘세계가 평화의 섬 제주를 노래하다’ 라는 주제로 ‘2018 제주국제합창축제 앤 심포지엄’을 2월 17일부터 20일까지 제주문예회관 및 제주오리엔탈호텔에서 개최된다.

천송재단·제주합창연합회·제주문화 기획연구소가 공동 주관하는 제주국제합창축제는 미국, 필리핀, 슬로바키아, 코스타리카 등 4개국 해외합창단과 국내 18개 합창단 등 총 1,500여명이 참가한다.

합창단 및 제주의 합창단들이 만들어가는 대표적인 제주의 겨울축제다. 아름다운 자연과 사람, 그리고 산과 바다가 조화롭게 어우러져 합창 하모니가 울려 퍼진다.

참가 합창단으로는 미국 서던미시시피대학교 서던코랄을 비롯해 필리핀 상토토마스싱어즈, 슬로바키아 프로무지카-마그놀리아 어린이합창단, 코스타리카 멜카페코랄 및 국내합창단으로 원주시립합창단, 인천시립합창단, 김해시립합창단, 여수시립합창단, 강릉시립합창단, 군포시립여성합창단, 이화챔버콰이어, 진주부부합창단, 청춘합창단, 필그림미션콰이어, 부산해운대구립여성합창단, W코랄앙상블, 안양시립소년소년합창단, 신명콘서트콰이어, 제주도립서귀포합창단, 제주농협하나로합창단, 제주콘서트콰이어, 그리고 특별 게스트로 메모리즈합창단 등이다.

김희철 예술총감독은 “축제를 통해 세계 유수의 합창단들과 지휘자, 그리고 음악인들에게 행복한 연주의 추억과 꿈같은 시간들을 선사하고 국내의 많은 음악인들과 제주도민, 그리고 제주를 찾는 관광객들에게 즐겁고 뜻깊은 시간이 되었으면 한다”고 밝혔다.

17일 저녁 7시에 제주문예회관에서 오프닝 콘서트가 열린다.

<2020 제주국제합창축제>는 다양한 합창레퍼토리를 소개하는 2020년 국내 최대의 합창축제입니다. 올해는 역대 가장 많은 합창지휘자와 강사 그리고 외국초청합창단들을 초청해 위기의 시대를 살아가는 우리 모두에게 평화와 쉼을 주제로 연주와 세미나, 워크숍 등을 전개합니다. 특히 외국초청합창단으로는 유럽에서 오는 라트비아, 슬로바키아. 그리고 처음으로 남미에서 초청된 코스타리카의 ‘엘카페코랄’이 참가하며, 미국과 중국의 대학합창단들이 펼치는 무대도 함께 이어집니다. 또한, 이미 우리에게 너무나 잘 알려진 필리핀 상토토마스대학합창단( U.S.T.Singers)의 연주는 우리를 기대감으로 설레게 합니다.

T.J. Harper 교수

2015년 올해의 교수상을 수상한 티제이 하퍼 교수는 미국 로드아일랜드에 위치한 Providence 음대의 학과장을 역임하였고, 2019년에는 미국 로스앤젤레스에 위치한 Loyola Marymount University로 옮겨 겸임교수와 합창활동 감독을 맡게 되었다.

미국 프레스코에 위치한 캘리포니아주립대학교에서 합창지휘로 학부를 마치고, 노스리지에 위치한 캘리포니아주립대학교(California State University)에서 합창지휘로 석사학위를, 서던캘리포니아대학(USC)에서 박사학위를 취득하였다. 캘리포니아공립학교에서 6년간 학생들을 가르치고 뛰어난 교사상을 수상하였다. 하퍼 교수는 국공립대학과 대학원에서 합창교육을 주장하는 등 합창을 보급화 하는데에 많은 기여를 하고 있다.

전 미국의 컨퍼런스 및 호주, 체코, 스페인과 이탈리아 등 다양한 곳에서 지휘자, 강사, 심사위원 등 왕성하게 활동하고 있으며 최근 중국, 아르헨티나, 스웨덴, 이탈리아, 스페인, 한국 등 전세계에서 그 영역을 넓혀나가고 있다. 그는 국제합창연합회의 이사로 있으면서 미국합창연합회의 국제교류활동을 맡고 있으며, International Conductors Exchange Program을 맡아 진행하고 있다.

합창리허설에서 과학적인 성악법을 연구하여 발표하였으며, 독일과 오스트리아, 비엔나, 프랑스에서도 연구활동을 발표하였다. 또한, 한국 전통음악도 연구하여 한국 단국대학교에서 발표하는 등 왕성한 활동을 하고 있다. 그의 논문은 ACDA 합창저널, IFCM 합창지면 등 다양한 곳에서 소개되었다.

T.J. Harper was the Chair of Providence College Department of Music, Associate professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities at Providence College in Providence, Rhode Island since 2019. He was the 2015 Professor of the Year and recipient of the Joseph R. Accinno Teaching Award. In 2019, Dr. Harper moves to Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, California as Associate Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities. He maintains an active schedule in the US and abroad as guest conductor, clinician, and jury member.

Recent engagements include residencies, guest conducting, lecturers and master classes in China, Argentina, Sweden, Italy, Spain, Costa Rica, Germany, South Korea, Thailand, Indonesia, Venezuela and honor choirs throughout the US. Dr. Harper is the Board Member for the International Federation of Choral Music (IFCM), the Chair of ACDA Standing Committee on International Activities and the Director of the

ACDA International Conductors Exchange Program (ICEP).

Dr. Harper’s research interests have led to funded research projects exploring voice-science in the choral rehearsal; the music of Johannes Brahms at the Brahms Institute of Lubeck, Germany and the Musikverein in Vienna, Austria; the Music Maurice Durufle at the St. Peter’s Abbey in Solesmes, France; and the folk music traditions of Dankook University in Seoul, Korea. His Publicaitons have appeared in the ACDA Choral Journal, the IFCM International Choral Bulletin, the NAfME Online Choral Forum, etc. Dr. Harper received the Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Southern California where he graduated with honors. He received the Masters of Arts in Choral Conducting from California State University, Northridge and the Bachelor of Arts degree and Choral Conducting California State University, Fresno. He taught in the California public school system for six years and was honored for excellence in the teaching in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers. Dr. Harper is an advocate for the promotion of undergraduate music education and choral music in the public schools.
